Once students have successfully completed Part IV of the Spanish Beginner course, students should be able to:

  • Construct sentences in Spanish in a variety of formats
  • Develop reading proficiency 
  • Assess literary terms and techniques
  • Identify and describe Spanish vocabulary words
  • Evaluate recurring themes in Spanish and Latin American literature.
  •  Assess the relevance of the themes to modern society and literature from other countries
  • Find, interpret, and critique published, scholarly works of literary analysis
  • Discuss literature and culture and express personal opinions in scholarly discussions

Once students have successfully completed Part I of the Spanish Intermediate course course, student should be able to:

  • Read in-depth about the lesson’s cultural theme, using authentic comprehension-supporting photos, videos, and multimedia.
  • Explore and interpret regional focus that will provide complete coverage of the entire Spanish-speaking world being studied. 
  • Examine and compare lexical and comparative features that highlight traditions, customs, and trends throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
  • Evaluate similarities and differences in the perspective of the Spanish-speaking countries being studied and one’s own cultural practices and values.
  • Recognize, understand, and pronounce multiple Spanish words including those expressing preferences in complex Spanish content.
  • Recognize the uses of preterite and imperfect, including irregular verbs, and the verbs ser and estar.
  • Recognize the use of progressive forms in ongoing actions and the use of subjunctive in noun clauses.
  • Recognize complex uses of object pronouns and uses of por and para.
  • Write descriptive narratives about events in the past.
  • Understand and summarize the main ideas and specific information in “authentic”. advanced, written, Spanish texts and when listening to spoken and recorded Spanish.
  • Describe a variety of topics such as expressing emotions, conditions, and daily routines, etc.
  • Develop advanced skills for reading, writing, listening, and comprehension of paragraphs of the topics mentioned above.

Once students have successfully completed Part II of the Spanish Intermediate course course, student should be able to:

  • Read in-depth about the lesson’s cultural theme, using authentic comprehension-supporting photos, videos, and multimedia.
  • Explore and interpret regional focus that will provide complete coverage of the entire Spanish-speaking world being studied.
  • Examine and compare lexical and comparative features that highlight traditions, customs, and trends throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
  • Evaluate similarities and differences in the perspective of the Spanish-speaking countries being studied and one’s own cultural practices and values.
  • Identify and pronounce multiple Spanish words including those related to comparisons, superlative forms, and negative and positive expressions in advanced Spanish content.
  • List the uses of the future tense, future perfect, the subjunctive in adjective and adverbial clauses, and the uses of present and past perfect subjunctive.
  • Identify the use of the present and past perfect, the conditional perfect, and the uses of the prepositions: a, hacia, and con.
  • State the uses of diminutives and augmentatives and the neuter lo.
  • Write descriptive advanced narratives about events in the present, past, and future.
  • Summarize the main ideas and specific information in “authentic” written advanced Spanish texts and when listening to spoken and recorded Spanish.
  • Describe a variety of topics such as traveling, nature, technology, science, economy, popular culture, etc.
  • Produce advanced skills for reading, writing, listening, and comprehension of paragraphs of the topics mentioned above.
